DVR Health Panel and Channel Rebuild

DVR Health Panel and Channel Rebuild

The DVR Health panel gives you real-time visibility into your DVR channel’s ingest activity and lets authorized users rebuild the underlying channel infrastructure when needed. The panel is available on any live stream channel configured with AWS MediaPackage.

Viewing DVR Health Metrics

Navigate to the Live Streams (Utilities > Server Configurations > Live Streams) settings for a channel that has DVR enabled. The DVR Health section displays the current state of your MediaPackage ingest pipeline:

MetricDescription
Active InputWhether the channel is currently receiving an ingest stream. Shown as a green Active badge (or an Inactive badge when no data flows).
IngressThe volume of data received over the last 5 minutes, displayed in human-readable units (KB, MB, GB).
Last CheckedThe timestamp of the most recent health check.

Health data refreshes automatically every 60 seconds. To refresh on-demand, click the Refresh button (circular arrows icon) next to the Last Checked timestamp. The button is unavailable while a refresh is in progress.

If the panel cannot retrieve health metrics (for example, because the channel has not yet been fully provisioned in this environment), the panel displays a warning message in place of the metrics.

Rebuilding a DVR Channel

The Rebuild DVR Channel action deletes and recreates the MediaPackage infrastructure backing your DVR channel. Use this to recover a channel that is in a broken or unrecoverable state.

Warning: Rebuilding is a destructive operation with the following consequences:

  • Ingest credentials will change. You must reconfigure any external encoder currently streaming to this channel with the new credentials after the rebuild completes.
  • The rebuild deletes DVR buffer contents. The rebuild permanently deletes any recordings held in the DVR buffer.
  • The channel is unavailable during the rebuild. You cannot use the channel until the rebuild finishes.

Prerequisites

Before you can rebuild:

  • You must have the Delete Live Stream permission (or be an admin or power user).
  • If the channel uses AWS MediaLive, the MediaLive channel must be in an IDLE state. Stop the MediaLive channel before attempting a rebuild. When the MediaLive channel still runs, the Rebuild button is unavailable and a tooltip explains why.

Steps

  1. Open the Live Streams settings for the channel you want to rebuild.
  2. In the DVR Health section, click Rebuild DVR Channel.
  3. Review the confirmation dialog and click Rebuild DVR Channel to proceed.
  4. A spinner and Rebuilding... label replace the button while the rebuild is in progress. Do not navigate away from the page during this time, as leaving will cause you to lose visibility into the rebuild status, though the rebuild itself will continue.
  5. When the rebuild completes, the channel displays a success notification, the health metrics refresh, and the channel automatically updates its recording input credentials. Copy the new credentials from the Recording Inputs section and reconfigure your encoder.

If the rebuild does not complete within about 2 minutes, the panel displays a failure notification. Check the channel status directly in the AWS console to find the current state.

Permissions

The Rebuild button is only visible to users who have the appropriate permissions. Users without the required role will see the button in a disabled state with a tooltip explaining that they do not have permission to perform the action.
